Postgraduate studies

The PhD programme in psychology includes studies over 4 years (240 HECs) leading to a Doctorate degree. There is also the option of finishing after two years with a Licentiate degree (120 HECs). The two programmes include formal courses and a thesis.

The postgraduate programmere represents the highest formal or the third level of higher education. The aim of the programme is that candidates should aquire the knowledge and skills in psychology required for research and other qualified positions in academia and research.

Please note: Although not a formal requirement it is expected that candidates will acquire sufficient competency in the Swedish language to be actively involved in seminars and other activities at the department.

The overall objective of the programme is to develop the knowledge and proficiency that is required to be able to conduct psychological research that will contribute to the scientific advancement of psychology. This should be demonstrated by completing an original scientific dissertation or a licentiate thesis.

Students should acquire knowledge about planning, leading, and implementing a research project. The education should also provide support for exposures to the international scientific community. The student should also develop communicative and pedagogical skills to orally and in writing demonstrate competency in the academic communityand externally.

Applicants need to meet the general and specific requirements outlined in the general study plan and syllabus.

Quality assurance

We continuously strive for developing and maintaining the quality of or PhD programme, through the Commission of Doctoral Studies, the Panel of PhD supervisors and the Council of Doctoral Students. We have also participated in several benchmarking projects in order to be inspired by other graduate programmes. The Swedish Higher Education Authority (UKÄ) evaluated our PhD programme in 2015-2016, and found it to be of high quality. The programme meets all quality requirements, was found to be well structured and to be of a high international standard.
